For Timmy Teguis, a junior biomedical engineering major at Fairfield University, this semester looks a little different—and a lot more exciting. Timmy is currently studying abroad at the University of Galway in Ireland, a decision driven by both academic ambition and a desire for global experience. “The University of Galway is one of the top biomedical engineering schools in the world,” he says. “Galway is also an amazing city.”
Now living in Ireland, Timmy has found the adjustment surprisingly smooth. The five-hour time difference wasn’t much of a hurdle—he simply stayed up late on his first day to align with the local schedule. Culturally, he’s embraced the slower pace and friendliness of Irish life. “The people are super nice—way nicer than at home,” he jokes. “Everyone walks everywhere and uses public transportation. It’s a different lifestyle, but I really like it.”
Even while classes are in session, Timmy is taking full advantage of the opportunity to travel. So far, he’s explored much of Ireland and recently visited Scotland—where one of his favorite memories was seeing Highland cows up close. With trips already planned to Oktoberfest, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Rome, and Florence, it’s clear that this semester is about much more than textbooks.
Academically, the program in Galway offers a unique change of pace. “The class structure is way different—there’s no homework, just a final exam,” Timmy explains. “Classes are also shorter—just 50 minutes long. The rigor is similar to Fairfield, but everything moves a little faster.” While the structure took some getting used to, it’s provided him with a fresh perspective on how engineering education is approached internationally.
Even though he’s only partway through his time abroad, Timmy is already recommending the experience to other engineering majors. “I think going abroad is a must,” he says. “It allows you to explore and experience new cultures.” His journey so far is a testament to the value of studying abroad—even in a rigorous field like engineering. With each day, Timmy is not only expanding his academic knowledge but also gaining independence, confidence, and a broader worldview.
From navigating a new culture and education system to exploring Europe one country at a time, Timmy Teguis’ semester in Ireland is shaping up to be an unforgettable chapter in both his academic and personal life—and it's still far from over.
