Katarina Plumtree arrived at Fairfield University in 2020, bringing a passion for both athletics and academics. Born in the United Kingdom to an English father and a Croatian mother, Katarina moved to Split, Croatia, at the age of four. There, she pursued professional tennis, with ITF until her transition to college life.
Educated at IV. Gimnazija Marko Marulić in Croatia, Katarina sought a university that offered strong academic programs on the East Coast, mentioning that the culture seemed more alike than in other parts of the U.S. Discovering Fairfield University through an agent, she received a scholarship to join the women's tennis team. Prior to this, her only experience in the U.S. was a childhood trip to Disney World in Florida at the age of ten.
At Fairfield, Katarina embarked on an ambitious academic path. Initially enrolling as a finance major, she was inspired to add accounting after actively participating in events hosted by the Dolan School of Business. She completed her undergraduate degrees, majoring in accounting and finance, with a minor in philosophy, and is currently pursuing a master's in accounting during her fifth year at the university. Her dedication has led to an upcoming role with Ernst & Young (EY) in New York City, where she will begin working in audits this summer, fulfilling her dream of working on Wall Street.
Katarina noted significant cultural differences, particularly in the environment. Europe is more walkable, with less reliance on cars due to centralized communities and the absence of sprawling suburbs. Despite these differences, she found people in America to be helpful and polite, although relationships often remain surface-level longer compared to Croatia.
One of the most positive aspects of her experience has been the educational environment. In Croatia, professors tend to be tougher and less approachable. At Fairfield, Katarina appreciated that teachers serve as mentors and friends, fostering a supportive community. She enjoys being part of both a vibrant town and an isolated campus, emphasizing the importance of safety and belonging.
As an international student, Katarina initially kept a low profile without a distinct accent and blending in appearance-wise. She noticed the subtle differences in her fashion and humor set her apart. She found a community with other international students, valuing the shared understanding and support within this community. Additionally, she formed friendships with classmates who were driven with similar aspirations.
Taking full advantage of Fairfield's proximity to New York City, Katarina enjoyed trips involving thrifting, dining, and exploring cultural spots. She delighted in finding Croatian food and connected with fellow countrymen while watching the World Cup at a local bar. Socializing and people-watching helped her feel more at home, though she admits to missing the café culture prevalent across Europe.
Reflecting on her journey, Katarina acknowledges that the initial years were challenging, especially with the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her advice to other students is to reach out to peers and find like-minded people who share similar interests and goals.
An unexpected encounter: Katarina was surprised when a woman recognized her Stags merchandise at a gym back home in Croatia, illustrating the far-reaching community of Fairfield alumni and students.
As she prepares to embark on her professional career with EY in New York City, Katarina carries with her the lessons and relationships forged during her time at Fairfield University. Her journey exemplifies the enriching impact of cultural exchange and serves as an inspiration to fellow students navigating the complexities of international education.
